Receiving and Cutting Mixed-Size Lumber

1. When receiving mixed-size lumber, it is important to accurately track inventory so materials can later be cut, measured, and used in production (such as pallet building).

There are times when lumber is purchased from a Supplier and the lengths and sizes are unknown.

This process explains how to receive mixed lumber into the system, estimate quantities using board feet, and convert that inventory into usable, dimensioned pieces during cutting.

The first step is to add the mixed sizes as a stock item within Pallet Connect.

  1. Go to Main Menu > Stock.

2.  Click on the selected lumber category, for example, "Manage Softwood".

3.  Click Menu and select "Add New Item".

4. IF THE BOARDFOOT OF THE LUMBER IS KNOWN: Under the General Tab, enter the dimensions using the sizes below:

Thickness: 1
Width: 12
Length: 12

Note:These values will be equal to 1 board foot per unit, which will assist with managing stock.

IF THE BOARDFOOT IS NOT KNOWN: The dimesions can be left blank (zero values) and the boardfoot will be calculated once the lumber has been cut to known sizes.

5. The item name can be updated to ensure clear identification across transactions for example "Mixed Sizes".

6. Once sufficient information has been entered, click "Create Item" to save.

7. Now, users can create a Purchase Order. From the main menu, go to Suppliers > New Purchase Order.

8.  Select the Supplier name and when adding items, select the new stock item e.g. "Mixed Sizes - Softwood".

9. Enter the desired count for the order. As shown below, each quantity is equal to a board foot, if the dimensions were inputted. Save the Purchase Order as usual.

10. After the order has been completed, it can now be 'Received'. From the Menu of the order page > Select 'Receive'.

Complete the rest of the process such as confirming the quantity and printing the labels (if needed). The quantity will now automatically be counted as stock.

11. The received "mixed sizes" can now be cut into known dimensions.

Follow the same process to "capture a cut", Click here to access the process for Cutting.

12. The Mixed Sizes can be selected as the Item to Cut and a quantity added.

13. If the board foot was added to the Stock Item profile, the starting board feet will be displayed.

Select the known dimension stock item "to cut to".

14. As the known dimension boards are cut the remaining board feet will be displayed.

The Mixed Sizes will automatically be removed from stock and the known sizes added to stock.
